Capstone

Spring 2010 - EAD 800

S. Weiland

This introductory course to the Masters of Education program at Michigan State University and takes a look look at educational philosophies, its history, purposes and future practices. Lastly, we identified our own beliefs and educational philosophies. One of my favorite things about this course was studying Howard Garnder's, "The Disciplined Mind" and the concept of learning information, skills and concepts with only studying three topics; the Holocaust, Mozart and the theory of evolution.

Fall 2010 - CEP 842

C. Okolo, T. McCarthy

This course provided content area instruction strategies for inclusion to improve the learning and academic performance of students with mild learning problems and disabilities. Tools, such as Universal Design Language and collaborative planning between departments, were discovered to differentiate instruction to individual learning needs and preferences. I loved this class because it taught me to identify with the personal on an individual level and how to communicate, work with and manage someone who is different from myself.

Spring 2011 - TE 843

C. Clara

This course studied the advances and benefits of including reading, writing and reasoning into all classrooms, not just English. Methods of how to include these skills in all classes including math, science and health were studied, practiced and integrated into lessons. Although probably not intended, this course had an impact on me as we used many educational technology tools which pushed me to focus on educational technology as one of my Masters focuses, and to achieve my Graduate Certificate in Online Teaching and Learning.

Fall 2014 - CEP 813

S. Sawaya, M. Schira Hagerman

This course introduced foundational theories of assessment and focused on using technology to introduce formative assessment methods. Tools included infographics, MinecraftEdu, Course Management Systems, iPhone and iPad apps, flipped classrooms, etc. I could not begin to describe what an amazing course this was, and suffice it to say, this was my favorite course in all of graduate school. To identify and analyze was in which to understand each student's individual knowledge on a subject and how to do that using technology, was exceptional.

Spring 2015 - CEP 817

J. Good, D. Henriksen

Learning Technology through Design closely examined using the Stanford Design Method to improve learning opportunities. Using multiple design activities and the SDM steps, we worked through design projects to test methods. This course was surprising, because it easily transferred to my career in facilities. I've often referred to the Stanford Design Method to find solutions to problems in my facilities and projects. It's been instrumental to finding solutions, and sometimes, not a solution, but a way to avoid another problem while working towards a way to an answer.

Spring 2015 - CEP 820

E. Boltz, A. Heintz

This course examined ways for teachers can use technology to better meet the needs of students through collaboration and communication. Various learning management systems were explored. The course focused on ways in which teachers and students can broadcast their ideas and information to the outside world for purposes of collaboration and communication. This course helped me to culminate lessons, unit plans and skills to create an entire unit plan I had previously used, into an online flipped course which used at home "homework" time to instead provide "lectures" via video and electronic presentations with follow up in person in the classroom where more time is allowed for individual questions, collaboration and communication.

Summer 2015 - EAD 867

M. Amey, E. Jessup Anger

In this course, the foundations and theories of leadership were studied and applied to case studies for deeper analysis and understanding for application. This class helped me to become a better manager by analyzing and clearly identifying the techniques and skills both inherent and learned that successful and quality leaders have, and what other attributes exist that  make for a poor leader.

Fall 2015 - EAD 861

J. Dirkx

This course studied the many ways and places in which adults learn in the post-secondary education, business, casual and unknown environment. The history of adult learning and and methods were studied in addition to the adult learner. This course is currently in progress.

Spring 2016 - EAD 801

W. Arnold

Leadership and organizational development were studied from an historical perspective as well as from multiple disciplines and with self-reflection for understanding of personal leadership experiences and opportunities within organizations. In this course I was able to take an indepth look at both the history of my last company in addition to closely studying a departmental issue and how the past was affecting it as well as the past and current leadrship. I then suggested a way that current and future leadership could work towards a resolution on the issue.

Spring 2016 - ED 870

M. Koehler

The Capstone course is the culmination of the Masters of Education program at Michigan State University and this site is the final project in which we reflect back on our program, projects and coursework and create a digital portfolio of our work. This course is currently in progress.
